Asin: Keeping her fingers crossed
By Taran Adarsh, Bollywood Hungama News Network
Asin is keeping her fingers crossed! The verdict will be out in a few days from now. “I wouldn’t say I am nervous. But I am anxious to know how the audiences react to the film and also to my performance. I haven’t watched the film yet – I don’t do that before it releases – but I’ve decided to watch it first day, first show,” Asin states.
Asin may belong to Kerala, but the pretty actress, who’s a leading name in South, speaks Hindi fluently. “We shot GHAJINI in sync sound, so there was no question of not knowing the language,” she smiles. In fact, Aamir had called up Asin after the screening of the Tamil version, congratulating her on her performance in the film. “In the end, he casually asked me if I could speak in Hindi. I replied in the affirmative. I didn’t realize why he asked me that question, until the makers approached me for the Hindi remake,” she reminisces.
With GHAJINI and LONDON DREAMS in her kitty, Asin has decided to move bag and baggage to Mumbai. “I moved to Mumbai in January this year. But that doesn’t mean I’ve closed the doors for South films. If the role interests me, I would instantly say ‘yes’ to a Tamil or Malayalam film. Let’s see how the career goes after GHAJINI,” she smiles

Katrina Kaif is accident prone
Mumbai, Dec 25 (IANS) Katrina Kaif is very accident prone. A month ago, Ranbir Kapoor missed his cue and slapped her so hard on the sets of “Ajab Prem Ki Gazab Kahani” that her face got swollen badly and shooting had to be cancelled. Last week, she got her leg rather badly injured while shooting for “De Dhana Dhan”.According to cast members at Film City here, Katrina was doing an underwater sequence with Akshay Kumar when her foot got tangled under water.
“The more she tried to extricate herself the more her leg got tangled. She tried to scream for help, but because of the noise on the sets including the stunt co-ordinators who were shouting instructions to the entire cast, no one heard Katrina’s screams of pain,” a source told IANS.
Finally, Akshay bailed her out.
“Akshay saw that Katrina was in trouble. He quickly swam to her and got her out of the tangle,” said the source.
Katrina’s leg was badly hurt. “It could’ve been worse,” said the source, “but tetanus shots and sedatives have eased her pain.”
When contacted, Katrina tried to downplay the incident saying: “It was nothing. I hurt my leg. There was a cut that hasn’t healed as yet. So I’m in pain.”bollywood.com
Sonam Kapoor signs her first endorsement deal with L’Oreal
By Bollywood Hungama News Network
Sonam Kapoor’s debut film Saawariya may have sunk without a trace at the B.O. Yet both the critics and audience were unanimous in their words of praise for the tall and pretty actress. Since then, Sonam has been busy shooting for her second film- Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s Delhi 6 where she is paired opposite Abhishek Bachchan.
This year, Sonam may not have had a single release, yet she has managed to stay in the limelight for one reason or the other. The latest is that Sonam has bagged her first official endorsement deal. According to sources, it is learnt that the young actress will be the brand ambassador for international cosmetic brand L’Oreal and will launch its new range of products targeted at the young generation.
By now its common knowledge that Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has been the face of L’Oreal. So does that mean its curtains for Ash from the L’Oreal family? Well, not quite, as Ash will continue her association with the brand as the original old face of L’Oreal while Sonam would be the face of L’Oreal for the younger generation.
Sonam has already shot for her first L’Oreal ad which will be launched sometime in January next year (2009).

Thought of working with Aamir makes Mona Singh nervous
New Delhi, Dec 27 (IANS) Indian television’s “Ugly Betty” Mona Singh, who is set to make her big screen debut with Aamir Khan-starrer “Three Idiots”, says she is excited but also nervous about working with the superstar.“Aamir is so good. It’s not even funny. He makes me so nervous. In fact, the thought of working with any of the big stars like Amitabh Bachchan, Aamir and Shah Rukh Khan makes me very nervous. But for now, I am excited,” Mona told IANS over telephone from Mumbai.
In “Three Idiots”, which is based on Chetan Bhagat’s best-selling novel “Five Point Someone” and is being directed by Rajkumar Hirani, Mona plays Kareena Kapoor’s sister.
“I play a very bubbly character in the film and my look is very different from what I look right now. My role is really good and I have a major part in the climax of the film,” said Mona.
She became extremely popular when she essayed the role of ugly duckling Jassi in Sony TV’s “Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin”. Her true identity was kept under wraps in the initial months of the show. Mona managed to win the viewers’ heart as Jassi.
Now she is back to being in disguise on a new reality TV show “Arre Deewano Mujhe Pehchano”. She would be competing with celebrity contestants Rakhi Sawant, Shweta Keswani, Mahesh Manjrekar, Yash Tonk, Gulshan Grover, Divya Dutta and Mandira Bedi to win the title of “Master of Disguise”.
Commenting upon the format of the show, she said: “The show is all about stand-up comedy actually. It’s about how well we can conceal our identity and find a scapegoat on the streets. It’s quite a challenge for all of us and a very refreshing show.”
Winner of two dance reality shows – “Jhalak Dikhla Jaa” and “Ek Khiladi EK Haseena”, Mona is quite confident of her success on the show.
She said: “I think I will be good. I had successfully remained in disguise for ‘Jassi…’ so I might perform better than others. But my voice is a big giveaway. When I speak in Hindi, it has a very strong Punjabi accent so I have to work hard on it.”
Right now Mona is seen in NDTV Imagine’s hit soap “Radhaa Ki Betiyaan Kuch Kar Dikhayengi”.
“I found the character interesting, so I took it up. Also, ‘Radhaa…’ is a very simple and sweet show and I used to watch it regularly,” she said.
For now, Mona is concentrating on “Arre Deewano Mujhe Pehchano” and “Three Idiots” and says some “interesting offers” are coming her way.

Priyanka, Akshay together again, for a show
Mumbai, Dec 26 (IANS) Akshay Kumar and Priyanka Chopra, who had stopped working together in spite of doing successful films like “Aitraaz” and “Mujhse Shaadi Karogi”, came together after a four-year gap for a show in Hong Kong.
Akshay and Priyanka performed together on stage Thursday for Christmas at the Convention Centre in Hong Kong for the show – From Chandni Chowk To Hong Kong.
“Yes, I performed on stage with Akshay Kumar in Hong Kong. It was great fun,” Priyanka, who has delivered two hits in the row – “Fashion” and “Dostana” – told IANS.
And what a rollicking show it was! Audiences have been craving to see the hit pair together for three years. Joining the pair was Bipasha Basu.
For reasons best known to them, Akshay and Priyanka, who came together for the first time in “Andaaz”, were never seen as a couple on screen after “Waqt – Race Against Time”. So deep was the cleft between the pair that Suneel Darshan had to scrap an Akshay-Priyanka starrer after picturising a song with them.
After Priyanka drifted away, Akshay tried to form a screen pair with Kareena Kapoor by doing some not so successful films like “Talaash”, “Bewafaa” and “Tashan”. When that didn’t work too well, the actor turned to Katrina Kaif for professional sustenance.
But now it seems the ice has thawed.

Jiah says she’s lucky to have worked with superstars
By Subhash K. JhaMumbai, Dec 27 (IANS) Jiah Khan has impressed with her performance in “Ghajini” and the 20-year-old says it was great acting with Aamir Khan in her second film, after having starred opposite superstar Amitabh Bachchan in her debut venture.
“If I had Mr. Bachchan as my co-star in the first film, here it’s Aamir. Can’t get any bigger,” Jiah told IANS.
The young starlet admits she was intimidated by Aamir. “To match up with him was quite a tough task. I’ve grown up by 10 years in the last two years,” she said.
“It’s a big film for me. And I was very happy with my role. ‘Nishabd’ and ‘Ghajini’ are so different. I needed this kind of a challenge. I’m dressed from head to toe – except for that one song (’Lattoo’) where I transform from a Plain Jane to a femme fatale,” the actress added.
Jiah was exceptionally good in the item number “Lattoo”, but she says it wasn’t difficult doing the song as she has been dancing to Bollywood numbers since she was six years old.
” ‘Lattoo’ is my first big Bollywood item song. And I’ve been performing to Bollywood songs from the age of six in front of the mirror. I’ve had years of practice,” Jiah laughed.
She was quick to brush aside reported difference between her and Asin, the lead actress of “Ghajini”.
“I didn’t have any scenes with Asin. But recently we were in Panchgani together and we spoke for the first time then. Without a doubt she was amazing in the Tamil version of ‘Ghajini’. This is her first Bollywood film and therefore a big thing. From my side there’s no bad blood at all. I think Asin is beautiful. She has been working a long time. This is just my second film. I had a lot to learn from both Asin and Aamir,” said Jiah, who debuted with controversial film “Nishabd”.
Directed by Ram Gopal Varma, “Nishabd” was loosely based on Vladimir Nabokov’s controversial novel “Lolita” and Jiah was paired opposite Amitabh Bachchan.
No regrets about doing an unconventional film like “Nishabd” so early in her career?
“None at all. I agree our audiences are still very conservative and ‘Nishabd’ was a very bold subject. Even in the West ‘Lolita’ created a huge controversy although they are no strangers to sex and nudity. For me ‘Nishabd’ was a challenge because I got to work with Mr. Bachchan and Mr. Varma so early in my career. And to be doing a central role in a film featuring Mr. Bachchan. It made me what I am. So I am grateful,” she said. bollywood.com

Shah Rukh Khan shares Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi experience
Shah Rukh Khan is back after a long gap of 13 months post his last release, Om Shanti Om with the much awaited Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. An excited King Khan shares with us his Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi experience and much more…This is your third film with Aditya Chopra, what was the experience working with him on Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi?Adi is a very very old friend, we have known each other for I think around 14 to 15 years maybe. We share a very close rapport, we started working in Darr when he was the chief AD and somehow we started feeling that we think the same. Adi and me have a lot of things in common as people, I think we are both a little reclusive, my job being an actor I think have to come out and be in the open but I would be a lot like Adi you know, a little shy, reclusive, quite wanting to create new things but strangely because both of us are alike, we do realize the decency in letting each have his own space, so its really wonderful professionally we respect each other. I call him Sir on the sets, I respect what he does, I think he’s a little more intense then me and I am a little more funny than him, so that helps in making a film because he brings the intensity like in “Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge” and I think I bring the comedy in a film like in “Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge”. This film we have gone over the top, he has allowed me to be funny I have allowed him to be intense, I think it’s a great mix when we come together and I respect him for his beliefs, he’s very earthy. ‘Thank you Adi’ for allowing me to be a part of your third dream and I hope I can continue to work very hard and hopefully try and be a part of your last dream too whenever that may be fifty-sixty years down the line. But I am like really blessed to have someone like Adi making films with me, and all three, so it’s a hundred percent record for me and I am really very thankful.Your look in the film is very different and most talked about, can you tell us a bit about it?The idea in the film to give the two characters the different look was obviously because they are two different characters and we wanted them to be extremely opposite. The first character Surinder Sahni we wanted him be a very real kind of a person middle class or maybe lower middle class kind of a guy having a fixed routine perhaps to the extent of being boring, fixed in what he does doesn’t deviate and life is normal for him and he thinks this is how life should be and also wanted to give him a little bit of amusing quality without making him a caricature or a comic, and to get all that I think a physical appearance was very very important, especially also for the movement of the story the look was very important which you will get to see when you see the film, and one fine day I just sort of put some moustache and got some hair piece done and showed it to Adi and Adi said this is the guy he should look like, its not just how weird I look, or funny I look or geeky I look or simple I look but the simplicity of the character will permeate thru the screen and you will say oh wow ‘In real life I am like this’ All of us become little weak when we are in love, all men hide this from their friends and other men but in front of women they are like chickens or hens and we just don’t ever say it, I think Surinder Sahni says it and its an internal voice of every man whose actually quite baby like when it comes to the women he loves and Surinder Sahni is that persona and within this whole look is the simplicity and the middle class-ness in the soul like I have told you before its just honesty when it comes to a woman. What do you think about the music of Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi? Which is your favourite track from the film?I think whenever I am normally asked this question what I think about the music of the film? I would like to really answer that I don’t think about the music of the film because music is not to be thought about, music is to be heard, enjoyed and felt, also I am a little tone deaf about music I don’t really know great music but as a lay man I do understand that all the songs sound cool of my film or other films and this is what happen to me when I hear the music of Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. I heard it in installments because Adi is secretive about his music so the first song I heard was “Haule Haule” and maybe its like love at first sight or love at first hear and Haule Haule is my favourite song. I think Salim-Sulaiman have excelled, they are wonderful music directors but for “Haule Haule” they have gone beyond and I think Jaideep’s lyrics both have merged together. It’s a modern sounding song with amazing earthy lyrics, it reminds me a bit of the Chak De India song “Kuch Kariye Kuch Kariye”. I don’t know, somehow its not similar at all but “Haule Haule” is sweeter, is kinder and little geekier that says some really nice things. My second most favorite song is the title track “Tujh Mein Rab Dikhta Hai”, but to be honest I think the beauty of the music of this film will lie when you see the film because it flows seamlessly. It has four songs visually in the film and when I saw the movie the best thing I liked is that the songs don’t stop the movie they don’t just come as an item they take the story forward each one of them actually and that’s why perhaps they are not how typically a song is picturised, like “Haule Haule” is picturerised in three shots its very interesting and visually I think the most attractive song is “Phir Milenge Chalte Chalte”. Its very attractive to the audience because I am doing a lot of different getups, its very attractive to me because I had five beautiful women dancing with me, so it was really nice. You get a new comer to act with you and then you have five fantastically, sexy and attractive ladies dancing with you so that was nice and visually its like really big and huge and Shiamak has excelled himself in that song, so on and on great music. There are some people in London I hear they like “Dance Pe Chance” because its got this English-Hindi kind of teaching you how to dance kind of music. Anushka has danced very well on it. I have tried to keep up, I have an excuse I am not a good dancer and even in the film I am suppose to be a bad dancer so it works well for me but overall I think the music is really nice really befitting this kind of film. Can you tell us something about the character you play…Surinder Sahni is someone that I have played before, it’s an ordinary person I have always said this and I will repeat it even if it’s a repeat that Adi and myself I think are quite responsible for creating this young urban yuppy hero type called Raj when we did Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. I wouldn’t like to take the whole credit but give it to Adi, but that kind of cinema and that kind of character we brought, where good at heart, golden hearted but really cool on top, perhaps could be misunderstood and I think over the years as we have grown we realized that we don’t even need to dress him up well. I think we decided that we have normally tried to sell you the model of a car with the beauty of its lines and say Oh its got a fantastic bonnet, its got fused lighting and its got this rooftop, it’s a convertible but basically what counts in a car is the engine. This time I think Adi and me decided that we are going to bare the engine and put it in front of the people and say if it doesn’t look very attractive it doesn’t have smooth lines, its not a convertible but this is what runs the car. So Surinder Sahni to me is the engine of most of the characters that perhaps Adi and me have done together. He is what he would look like from inside, may be not very attractive may be little simple but Surinder Sahni runs this character. So I wouldn’t call Surinder Sahni a character actually I would call him the soul of lot of characters that Adi has written for me and other actors also.Any one memorable incident during the shoot of the film?I think the most memorable part of this film making to me atleast was the first seven-eight days when I changed my look for Surinder Sahni and I would be walking on the sets with nobody recognizing me, I got a taste of films to come thirty years later when I am no longer a star that nobody will recognize me and I will miss it, I think that is the most memorable moment and I hope it never happens to me again ever, because not to be recognized after twenty years of such high recognition is something I wasn’t ready for and not only that my own make up person whose known me for twenty years I would look at him to give me my make up equipment and he would just look thru me, nobody recognized me including my own people and I found that strangely eerie, surreal and shocking to say the least.
Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi -2008
Destiny plays a cruel joke on an extremely enthusiastic young girl Taani (Anushka) as she loses her fiancé and his family in a road accident on the eve of her marriage. Her father, a retired professor, on his death bed requests her to marry his old favourite student, Surinder Sahni (SRK). Taani obeys his last wish and thus begins the start of this extraordinary love story between an otherwise ordinary jodi.
The shy, somewhat geeky Surinder has already fallen for Taani since the first time he has seen her but all his hopes crash when Taani tells him the day they arrive at his house that she won’t be able to give him any love as that’s one feeling she has lost forever with the sudden turn of events in her life. The rest of the film is about how Suri transforms himself into a very hep flirtatious dude Raj to win her love using a dancing school as a platform for his antics. He is well aided with his childhood buddy Bobby (Pathak) who brings on the physical transformation in him. But what happens is Taani who is unaware of Raj being Suri himself ends up falling in love with Raj. Suri is now again in a fix but then he finally decides to take a bold step.
Rab Ne has been definitely amongst the most awaited films of 2008 and there have been great expectations riding on it especially because it is Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jaayenge maker Aditya Chopra’s comeback film after a long gap of 8 years. The script has its moments and master craftsman Adi keeps you engaged initially with some really beautifully handled moments between SRK and Anushka. But as SRK’s character’s transformation comes in, the grip slowly loosens and you start feeling restless with the pace slumping down considerably. What follows is a criss-cross between some really well penned and executed scenes and some really drab moments with badly placed songs acting as speed breakers. But Adi’s terrific dialogues deserve a special applause for touching the right chords.
Shah Rukh Khan is simply superb as first the shy Suri and then the flamboyant, full of energy, Raj. Newcomer Anushka gets a really well etched character to perform and it despite being her first film, she comes across an absolute natural. Vinay Pathak is fun and provides good comic relief.
Music of the film is good but the problem is apart from a very well tuned and picturised Haule Haule number, the rest songs appear wrongly placed. The picturisation of the number featuring Kajol, Preity Zinta, Bipasha Basu, Lara Dutta and Rani is mindblowing but again it coming at a wrong juncture doesn’t really make it work.
All in all, the film has the capacity to do very well in the North and the overseas but elsewhere the film won’t be anywhere near Adi’s earlier two works in terms of business.
